Troubleshooting Media Uploads for Course Assignments

This article explains how to troubleshoot and resolve common issues when accessing or submitting course assignments that include file uploads or embedded media.

Summary

  • If you cannot upload a video or embed media on an assignment page, start by clearing your browser cache and site data, then try the upload again. If that does not resolve the issue, provide a screenshot and a shareable file link to support for further review. Compressing the video may be attempted but does not always resolve upload problems.

Before you begin

  • Make sure the file you are trying to submit is in a supported format and that you can open/play it locally.
  • If you have already compressed the file and the upload still fails, proceed with the steps below.

Step 1 — Clear your browser cache and site data Clearing cache and cookies often resolves upload and access issues. Follow the steps for your browser and then retry the upload.

Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Click the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Go to Privacy and security.
  5. Click Clear browsing data.
  6. Choose a Time range (select All time for a full clear).
  7. Check:
    • Cookies and other site data
    • Cached images and files
  8. Click Clear data.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Click the three lines (☰) in the top-right corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Go to Privacy & Security.
  5. Scroll to Cookies and Site Data.
  6. Click Clear Data.
  7. Check both options:
    • Cookies and Site Data
    • Cached Web Content
  8. Click Clear.

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Click Safari in the top menu and select Settings (or Preferences).
  3. Go to the Privacy tab.
  4. Click Manage Website Data.
  5. Click Remove All → confirm. To clear caches specifically:
  6. Go to Safari > Settings > Advanced and enable Show Develop menu in menu bar.
  7. Click Develop in the top menu and select Empty Caches.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Edge.
  2. Click the three dots (⋯) in the top-right corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Go to Privacy, search, and services.
  5. Under Clear browsing data, click Choose what to clear.
  6. Select a Time range.
  7. Check:
    • Cookies and other site data
    • Cached images and files
  8. Click Clear now.

Step 2 — Retry the upload or embedding action

  • After clearing cache and site data, reload the assignment page and attempt the upload or embed again.

Step 3 — Gather information to help support in resolving the error. If the issue persists after clearing cache and retrying:

  • Take a screenshot of the error or of what you see on the submission page.
  • If possible, create a shareable link to the file (for example, from a cloud storage service) so support can access the file you are trying to upload.
  • Provide the browser name and version you are using and the steps you took when the problem occurred.

Additional notes

  • Compressing a video is a reasonable troubleshooting step, but it may not always resolve upload or embed failures.
  • Clearing cache and cookies is the recommended first troubleshooting action for assignment access and upload problems.

If issues persists please contact your program advisor for assistance.
