Preparing for Clinical Practice: A Step-by-Step Candidate Guide
Clinical Practice is one of the most important phases of your Moreland University program. This guide walks you through everything you need to do — from finding your placement school to completing your final verification — so you can start your practicum with confidence.
Step 1: Find Your Clinical Placement School
You are responsible for securing your placement, but you don't have to do it alone.
-
Begin the search process during ED 501 or ED 502 when you meet with your Program Advisor.
-
Reach out to schools and districts directly, make connections, and gather the information needed to secure an approved site.
-
If you need extra support, Moreland's Clinical Placement Specialist is available to assist.
Tip: Start early. Finding the right school takes time, and your MOU must be submitted before the end of Module 6.
Step 2: Submit Your School Placement and Mentor Information
Once you have a school and mentor in mind, enter their details on the Teach-Now platform.
-
Log into the Teach-Now platform and click the 'Clinical' tab on the left.
-
At the top of the page, check whether Placement and Mentor are marked as confirmed. If either shows 'No', you still need to enter information.
-
Scroll down to 'Clinical School Details'
- First check to see if your school or organization is in the View School List dropdown box. IF SO, please select it, BUT you still need to fill out the fields that remain empty. Do not leave any box blank, or the MOU will not be sent to your supervisor.
-
IF NOT, you must fill in every field — school name, phone, address, website, supervisor name, email, position, grade levels, and location (country and state). Do not leave any box blank, or the MOU will not be sent to your supervisor.
-
Scroll down further to 'Clinical Mentor Details' and fill in all mentor fields completely.
-
Click 'SAVE'. This is critical — unsaved information will be lost when you log out.
- If your school WAS in the View School List dropdown box, you are done.
-
If your school was NOT in the View School List dropdown box, a pop-up will appear asking if the MOU can be sent to your school supervisor. Click 'YES'. Let your supervisor know to check their inbox and spam/junk folders.
Note: Once the MOU is sent, you cannot edit your school details. If changes are needed, you must delete and re-enter the school information.
Step 3: Understand the MOU
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is a required agreement that outlines the responsibilities between Moreland University and your placement school.
-
Moreland provides a template MOU that is sent automatically to your school supervisor for electronic signature.
-
If your school wants to request changes to the MOU, they should download the electronic version, mark it up, and send it to clinical@moreland.edu. Moreland will then run it through its legal process.
Step 4: Confirm Your Supervisor and Mentor
Understanding the difference between these two roles will help you get the right people in place.
-
Supervisor — An administrator (e.g., Principal, Assistant Principal, Head of School, or HR/District representative) who approves your student teaching at the placement school. They sign the MOU.
-
Mentor — An experienced educator who supports you throughout your clinical practice. They will meet with you weekly to help with lesson planning, data tracking, and reviewing recorded lesson observations.
In some cases, the supervisor can also serve as the mentor — as long as they meet the mentor requirements below.
Mentor Requirements
Your mentor must:
-
-
Have 3–5 years of outstanding teaching experience in your certification area, OR hold an active teaching certification in that area
-
Be working at the same school where you complete Clinical Practice
-
Be approved by the district or school supervisor
-
Not be a current Moreland candidate or a spouse/family member
-
State-specific requirements also apply:
-
-
Arizona: Mentor must have a minimum of 3 full years of relevant experience, a current "effective" or "highly effective" classification (per §15-203(A)(38)), and must complete Moreland's asynchronous virtual training.
-
Georgia: Mentor must hold an active teaching license in your exact certification specialization, confirmed through the GaPSC Lookup Certification Status platform.
-
Virtual Mentors are only available in extenuating circumstances where no qualified teacher exists at your school. This must be confirmed with your school supervisor before a virtual mentor is assigned.
At the end of Clinical Practice, your mentor must complete the Verification of Clinical Practice (VoCP) form on the platform.
Step 6: Check Your Confirmation Status
To verify that your placement and mentor have been approved:
-
Go to the 'Clinical' tab on the Teach-Now platform.
-
Check the top of the page — if both Placement and Mentor show 'Yes', you are ready to begin your Clinical Practice.
Step 7: Complete and Submit Module 8 Requirements
Before your VoCP can be submitted:
-
Submit all ED 508 (Module 8) activities on the platform.
-
Receive your final score.
It is normal for the VoCP to show as 'Missing' at the start of Clinical Practice. This is expected and will be completed by your mentor or school supervisor once all requirements are met.
Step 8: Mentor Payment
Once your VoCP is confirmed and all Module 8 requirements are complete:
-
Your mentor logs into their Teach-Now homepage and opens the Remittance Form.
-
They complete and click 'SAVE'.
-
Moreland's Accounting Team processes a $250 payment within 4–6 weeks.
