Moreland University: North Carolina Certification Guide

In this article, we will be reviewing the licensure process for the state of North Carolina — They use a two-step pathway: first, a Residency License (1-year, renewable twice), then conversion to an Initial Professional License before expiration. Candidates need at least a 2.7 GPA, must pass content-area exams, and must complete the edTPA (to be completed within the first year of the Residency License).

Items Needed for Application

  • Official Bachelor's Transcript

  • Transcript Evaluation (international degrees)

  • Official Moreland Transcript (via Parchment)

  • Licensure content area examination(s) (if applicable)

  • Forms as listed on the NC DPI website

Obtaining the Residency License is the first required step. It is a 1-year license, renewable up to twice (3 years total). You must convert it to an Initial Professional License (IPL) or Continuing Professional License (CPL) before it expires. The Residency License must be obtained during your first year of teaching.

Requirements for the Residency License
To qualify, you must: (1) hold a bachelor's degree with at least a 2.7 GPA; (2) have either completed 24 credit hours in the licensure area OR passed the NCSBE required content area exams; (3) be enrolled in a recognized EPP; (4) meet all other NCSBE requirements.

For the Residency License form: Complete the applicant section at the top, send it to your LEA to verify employment first, then send the completed form to your Moreland Program Advisor. The signed form will be returned to you to include in your application.

Transcripts
Provide an official bachelor's transcript (US) or NACES-approved evaluation. Order your Moreland transcript via Parchment. Electronic copies of official degree-dated transcripts are acceptable — unofficial electronic copies are not.

Pass the Required Exams

  • Exam 1

  • Exam 2

    • edTPA (Required — must complete within first year of Residency License)

  • Exam 3

    • CORE Basic Skills (Reading, Writing, Math)

Elementary K-6 or SpEd General Curriculum: You are required to take the Pearson Foundations of Reading (passing score 233) + Pearson Math (or Praxis Math CKT). You do NOT take the Praxis Content Knowledge exam.

Apply via the NCDPI Online License System

Register or log into the NCDPI Online License System. Upload all required documentation and pay the required non-refundable licensure fee by Visa or Mastercard.

Note: If you completed the Moreland program before Moreland's EPP status was established (April 2024), the direct-apply pathway is not available to you. Review NC reciprocity regulations or contact NCDPI directly.

Notes and Tips:

  • The Residency License must be obtained during your first year of teaching — don't delay the application once employed.

  • Elementary K-6 and SpEd General Curriculum candidates take Pearson Foundations of Reading and Pearson Math instead of the standard Praxis Content Knowledge exam.
