This program prepares educators to become confident, informed advocates for students with disabilities, equipping you with both the theoretical knowledge and the practical tools to do the work well.
This program is offered alongside the TEACH-NOW Teacher Preparation Certificate, so you can earn both your teaching certification and your Master's degree at the same time, though not simultaneously. Because of the graduate credits you earn in the certification portion of the program, this add-on master's degree requires only an additional 4 modules-approximatley three and a half months of coursework.ertification and your Master's degree at the same time.

What You'll Learn

- Foundational theory and application of special education
- Child find systems, Response to Intervention (RTI) methods, and referral processes
- How to implement, identify, and coach evidence-based instructional practices
- Data collection and analysis for data-based team decision-making
- All components of an Individualized Education Program (IEP): present levels of performance, goal development, placements and services, and prior written notice
- Assessment and identification: Learn to distinguish between special education needs and language development differences — a critical skill for accurate evaluation.
- Least Restrictive Environment (LRE): Apply LRE principles to support school structures, programs, and student placement decisions.
- Collaborative practice: Provide evaluative feedback on diagnostic data and collaborate with related service providers and general education teachers.
- Real document work: Gain hands-on experience dissecting and working through Student Support Plans — IEPs, 504s, and more — to guide teams through decision-making.
